Our first lesson....

Fieldwork time!!!! This was the first day of our class teaching the fifth grade students at Bishop Dunn Memorial School. I was in Group 1, and we went first! We taught our direct lesson plan for the first half of the class time. The lesson was all about the Voyages of Columbus, and it was a Direct Instruction Lesson Plan. Our goal was for the student to understand the voyages of Christopher Columbus to the new world.
The students really enjoyed our lesson. Meagan, Faith and I alternated between one another while discussing and teaching all of the facts and information we gathered.

We made sure this lesson was also interactive, where the students played a few games on the SMART board, we had them check for understanding with the vortex game and then again at the end we had our summative assessment which was the class playing jeopardy! It was such a great time for all of us.

One thing that I feel could have went better is if we had more time. We did not have enough time for our closure because we did not want to take up the next group's time with the class.
I learned that students really do like Social Studies it is up to the teacher to ensure they are actively engaged in the work. We tried to follow the principles our text talk about, we made sure the Social Studies was meaningful, integrative, value-based, challenging and active. We kept these in mind while planning and teaching. I think that our team did great, we all worked really well together and can't wait for the next lesson!
